Shelterbox Appeal

22 January 2010: Cheque presented for the Shelterbox to the Rotary Club

Last Friday Amy and Reya presented the cheque for the School's fund raising to Richard Akister of the Rotary Club who was thrilled with the way that the children had responded to the charity after it visited the school early in the Autumn term.

When the children began their fundraising for Shelterbox back in September they had no idea of the Humanitarian disaster that was about to hit Haiti. However they are now determined to raise even more money for another Shelter by running more events. Watch this space for details! For the very latest news from Shelterbox click the logo below.

Horror in Haiti
By Reya Muller Year 5

The ground begins to shake,
People in their beds awake,
A sound like nothing you have ever heard,
Comes to their ears, it seems absurd,
They dare not leave their doors,
The sound gradually turns to a roar,
Houses fall and crumble, this means nothing but trouble,
People are crushed beneath rubble,
Children slaughtered and killed,
The atmosphere considerably chilled,
The rubble of a hospital, meant to save but only murdered more.

December 2009: Children raise £640 for Shelterbox appeal

In just a few weeks the children at Carbrooke School have raised a staggering £640 for a Shelterbox to help families in disaster areas around the world.

The children made the commitment to try and raise money for a box following a visit by the charity to the school.  During the visit the children were able to see the box for themselves and even try out the shelter.

Fundraising activities have included a non- school uniform day, a sponsored silence, a cake sale, a tombola, table top sale and a school disco.

“We are really proud of the children and in the way they have organised fundraising for Shelterbox” says Headtaecher Sue Youngs. “I’m sure that being able to see the box and the shelter for themselves and try it out gave the children a real idea of what it might be like to experience a disaster and motivated them to want to help.”

Shelterbox  instantly respond to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value. The cost of a box is £490, including delivery direct to those who need it. Each box bears its own unique number so as a donor you can track your box all the way to its recipient country via the website Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organisations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide
