Our policies
ADMISSIONS
The L.E.A. Admission Policy is as follows:
Children who are 5 between September and the end of February are admitted to school on a full-time basis at the beginning of the Autumn term. Children born after February and before 1st September are admitted on a full time basis in January.
We offer part time provision every week day morning from 8.55 am - 12 noon. This part time provision is voluntary.
The present intake limit is 27. Priority is given to children living within the parish of Carbrooke and those with siblings at the school. Parents will be advised at the beginning of the Summer term prior to admission if a place is available at the school. There is an appeals procedure for parents of children who are not offered a place. Further details are available from the Education Department at County Hall (Tel. 01603 222222).
Prospective parents are most welcome to visit the school. Please telephone to make an appointment.
COLLECTIVE WORSHIP (ASSEMBLY)
A collective act of worship takes place every day which is mainly Christian in nature. Usually this is taken by the local vicar or curate on one day each week. Parents wishing to withdraw their children from R.E. or the devotional part of the morning assembly are invited to discuss the matter with the headteacher.
UNIFORM
We have a uniform, chosen in consultation with parents, which is simple yet practical. It is requested that, except for exceptional circumstances, uniform is worn at all times.
Girls: Grey skirt, blue trousers, blouse or school polo shirt, navy school sweatshirt/ dress/cardigan. In summer, a dress or skirt with a small blue check or stripe may be worn.
Boys: Grey trousers, shirt or school polo shirt andnavy blue pullover/navy School sweatshirt.
School coats fleeces, sweatshirts, cardigans, polo shirts and dresses are available from the P.T.A. at reasonable prices. Order forms are sent home at the beginning of each term. All other items can be purchased from local shops and department stores.
It would also be appreciated if protective clothing could be provided by parents for their child for use during painting lessons and waterproof aprons for the younger children for scientific experiments with water.
CLOTHING FOR P.E.
Clothing for P.E. and games consists of navy/black shorts, white/navy T-shirts. Junior children also require a pair of strong trainers for use on the school field, which can be muddy at times. For ease of handling P.E. equipment should be kept in a named P.E. bag.
LUNCH BREAK
Children may stay on the school premises between 12.00 and 1.15.p.m. when they are currently supervised by five Mid-day Supervisors and a member of staff. However, it is possible for children to go home during this time if so desired. Very occasionally staff may deem it beneficial for the child to return home for that period of time. However any such action will be in full consultation with the parents concerned.
SCHOOL DINNERS
A school meal can be provided. This is currently priced at £1.90. We will keep you informed of any price rises made by Norfolk County Service Catering Department. Dinner money for the week should be paid to the secretary before school on Mondays or the first day back after holidays or absence. Your child may be entitled to a free school meal. Please contact the school office for details.
The canteen can provide either a packed lunch or a hot dinner.
PACKED LUNCHES
In order to facilitate the smooth running of the lunch break parents are asked to observe the following:-
1. Food and drink are contained within a lunch box.
2. No cans or glass bottles please.
3. As we have children in school that have a severe allergy to peanuts, we do ask that nothing containing nuts be put in packed lunches i.e. peanut butter sandwiches, snickers bars etc.
4. All food and drink may only be eaten during the set meal period while observing accepted table manners.
5. We encourage healthy eating and therefore suggest that children do not bring sweets to school.
ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL
If it is necessary to keep your child away from school for a health appointment or for an annual holiday, please inform the class teacher. In the case of sickness please phone contact the school before 9-30 on the first day of illness. We are required to maintain a record of authorised and unauthorised absences for each child. Authorised absence includes illness, medical/dental appointments and a maximum of two weeks holiday, i.e. 10 school days. Please complete a holiday form if the annual holiday is unavoidable during term time.
We are required to publish the rates of authorised and unauthorised absence for 2006-07 up to May 2007 half term.
CHILD PROTECTION
This school prides itself on the exceptional care that it offers its pupils. We aim to ensure that all pupils are well known by staff. We value their right to feel secure.
Parents are requested to inform the school about arrangements for collecting their children at the end of the school day. Any changes to these arrangements should be notified to the school before 3.00 p.m. on the day in question.
It is our duty as parents and school staff to ensure that the children in our care are not exposed to avoidable harm or danger. All staff are fully aware of Child Protection procedures and know to whom they should report any concerns or suspicions.
The school follows the current government guidelines regarding police checking of staff and parent helpers.
HEALTH AND HYGIENE
If a child suffers from a contagious or infectious disease, please let the school know, so that the School Health Services may be informed. Anything that can be "passed on" must not be concealed because of the effect on other members of the community. (This applies especially to headlice). The school nurse visits the school regularly. She may be contacted at the Watton Health Office (Tele: 01953 884003).
MEDICINES
We do not have medicines in school. When it is essential - for example when a child needs access to an inhaler - please complete a medicine form (available from the school office)
PARENT CONSULTATION
Parents' consultation sessions are held during the Autumn and Spring terms and a written report is sent home at the end of the school year. However the class teacher is available to discuss children's progress or any difficulties which may arise on most days after school. The Head and Parent Governors are also available for discussion if a parent has concerns about any aspects of school life.
Parents and adult members of the community are welcomed and encouraged to observe, talk and work with the children during school hours. By doing this, parents can fully appreciate the learning processes in which their children are involved. Please contact the Headteacher if you are able to help in school.
HOME SCHOOL AGREEMENT
From September 1999, the government has required the school to have a written home school agreement drawn up in consultation with parents. It sets out the responsibilities of the school and your responsibilities, and what the school expects of its pupils. Parents will be asked to sign the agreement
COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE
Should a situation arise where you feel you need to seek a resolution to an issue which concerns you please arrange an appointment to discuss the issue with the head teacher. If this does not lead to a satisfactory resolution, please contact the Chair of Governors in writing. If the issue cannot be resolved by the Chair of Governors, the issue will go before a meeting of a sub committee of the Governing Body. You will be invited to attend this meeting.
You will be advised about the outcome of the meeting within 7 days.
A formal complaint may be made in writing to the LEA at: County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich, NR1 2DL.
TRANSPORT TO SCHOOL
Children who live on the estates on the main raid which are within the Carbooke boundary are eligible for free transport to school whilst Summer Lane is deemed to be unsafe to walk down. Otherwise parents are responsible for transporting their children. We would like to encourage you to walk or cycle whenever possible. This reduces the congestion outside the school and also provides the children with the exercise they require to undertake a days learning at school. We encourage parents to walk their children to school.
